Members of the Picayune American Legion, a veteran’s group, have apologized for hosting virtual casino gambling in a back room at their lodge. After police were tipped off by a confidential informant, the police searched the American Legion headquarters in Picayune and found four virtual casino gambling machines in a closed- off room. According to ledgers provided by the group’s leaders, the virtual casino gambling machines have generated about $30,000 in revenue since December 30, 2005. American Legion Public Affairs Officer Mark Thorman issued a formal apology, although they denied having had personal knowledge of the virtual casino gambling machines’ presence. “I don't gamble and I definitely didn't gamble in that American Legion post, but I will take responsibility because we are leaders,” Thorman said. “They shouldn't have been in there. We don't want the whole world to think that's what we do,” Thorman said. “We are evaluating our policies of the way things are done on the bar side. We are taking steps to ensure this will not happen again.” The American Legion members said that they will cooperate fully with the police to make sure that this sort of incident does not occur in the future.
